Local Noise Ordinances and Trick-or-Treating
When you have shared parenting time, you must abide by the enumerated agreement or order, even on Halloween. However, you may always amend the parenting time for the purpose of trick-or-treating if both parents agree. It’s not required to amend the parenting time via court order. However, it’s recommended to at least have the agreement in writing, even if simply in an e-mail or text message.
The local noise ordinances and trick-or-treating times and schedules do not automatically affect your parenting time without such an agreement of both parties. If your parenting time falls on Halloween, be mindful of the local ordinances designating trick-or-treating time, and keep in mind the noise ordinances if your house is decorated with lights and sounds.
Remember to always supervise your children and educate them about safety, including safely crossing roads and not following strangers nor accepting invitations to go inside a stranger’s car or home when promised more candy inside.
The noise ordinance designates quiet hours between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am for residential and commercial zones. There is no noise ordinance designated quiet hours for light industrial zones nor industrial zones where the noise cannot exceed 70 dBA and 80 dBA, respectively. If you exceed these decibels at any time, you may be subject to a noise complaint and a nuisance claim.
Trick-or-treating times are not regulated in Naperville; however, the Naperville police recommends that younger children should end trick-or-treating before it gets dark, and older children should wrap up their trick-or-treating by 8:00 pm, and only trick-or-treat on October 31, 2023.
The noise ordinance is set between 10:00 pm and 8:00 am in most of the city, so long as the area is within 600 feet of a residential zone. The majority of Chicago falls within this quiet time zone.
Trick or Treating times are officially set to October 31, 2023, between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm. For your children’s safety, always supervise them as they go knocking from door to door on Halloween.
The noise ordinance is set between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am in all of Champagne.
Trick or Treating times are officially set to October 31, 2023, between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
Unlike Champaign, IL, Downer’s Grove has a much more complex noise regulation. Make sure to review the Noise Regulation in Downer’s Grove before planning your Halloween front yard spectacle.
